On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at approximately 4:53pm the island nation of Haiti was disastrously traumatized and devastated by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake. Haiti Image - Wiki CommonsNot since the 1960 Chile earthquake has a people been so overwhelmed by an unpredicted and bewildering force of nature. As the dust settled and the minutes turned into hours and then days did the frightening sense of loss and uncertainty begin to take hold.

Recruitment Information

National Disaster Medical System

The National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) uses individuals with specific expertise and experience within a wide range of professions. Individuals with a background in the medical and public health services, emergency management, or forensic sciences, etc. could fill vacant positions on the various response teams within NDMS.

Each NDMS response team has a set number of authorized positions within their team. Also, each team has required types of specialist needed to fill these vacant positions for their team. Additionally, each response team position has pre-requisite training requirements that must be met before individuals can apply. If accepted, individuals become intermittent part-time Federal employees upon deployment on a mission.
Interested individuals must contact a team within their geographical area to ascertain if a position is available and if they have the education, training and experience needed for that particular position.

If you are interested in finding out more about NDMS or if you want to contact your local team, please
provide your contact information.

How are NDMS personnel compensated?
NDMS personnel are paid while serving as part-time federal employees and have the protection of the Federal Tort Claims Act in which the Federal Government becomes the defendant to provide interstate aid in the event of a malpractice claim.

How is my permanent employment protected, if I become an NDMS employee?
Your non-NDMS employment is protected for approved trainings and deployments under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) as long as you meet the eligibility requirements.

Greater Washington Haiti Relief Committee

WASHINGTON, DC - January 19, 2010 - The GWHRC has established a website for volunteers wishing to help with the Haiti earthquake relief efforts.  The information collected by the website will be utilized to capture specific skill sets and availability of those wishing to volunteer.  We need a variety of volunteers from those who can help sort and pack donated items to those who are available to answer phones to doctors that can go to Haiti.

We remain in need of volunteers who can provide services locally and will need volunteers willing to go to Haiti to provide assistance. For relief efforts in Haiti, we will need medical professionals, along with engineers, teachers, counselors, and other professions.

The website is
https://volunteer.gwhrc.org.  GWHRC is asking everyone to visit this website and register your information.  Even volunteers that previously filled out forms at events over the weekend, we encourage you to re-register the information at the website.

All information will be securely stored and only accessible by authorized users with GWHRC and the Embassy.

The Embassy and the GWHRC greatly appreciate all the support from the volunteers thus far.  The outpouring of volunteers and donations this past Sunday at the Embassy and on Monday at the warehouse was truly an exceptional example of compassion and public spirit.

We thank you all for your generosity and for caring about the people of Haiti in our time of need.

What does it take to register for disaster relief service?
