A Special Message from the ABPsi President
April 6, 2010
An Opportunity For The ABPsi To Weigh In On The DSM-5
Greetings ABPsi members,
I am forwarding this VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE to any interested ABPsi member concerning the opportunity to provide input into the American Psychiatric Association’s current efforts to revise the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM). Unfortunately, the timeline for visitors to contribute with feedback to the American Psychiatric Association site will only be available until Midnight on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. A draft version of the DSM-5 is available for public viewing by going to: www.dsm5.org. For an overview of my recomendations and to view this document in its entirety, click here or visit www.abpsi.org.
Since 1968 members of The Association of Black Psychologists have participated in making landmark contributions to the field of psychology in ways designed to identify and eradicate disparities while also establishing cultural competence benchmarks in mental health. Decades before the momentous 1999 Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General, The Association of Black Psychologists' seminal Journal of Black Psychology has contributed numerous published articles addressing relevant issues concerning the consequence of the DSM’s diagnostic impact in misclassification and misdiagnosis concerning Black/African American people. The late Reginald Jones also contributed to this process through his edited book series titled Black Psychology.
Once again, we have an opportunity to have an effect on a process that continues to have a profound impact on the cultural relevance of mental health treatment and the access to insurance coverage for Black/African American clients/patients. Therefore, I strongly recommend that you seriously consider making your mark on this process within the next few days. While The ABPsi appears to have been overlooked during this notification process, this E-Blast represents an effort to create an opportunity for our membership to provide critical feedback in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Benson George Cooke
President
The Association of Black Psychologists |
